1 At that time Jesus went on the sabbath day through the corn; and his disciples were an hungred, and began to pluck the ears of corn, and to eat.

 

2 But when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto him, Behold, thy disciples do that which is not lawful to do upon the sabbath day.

 

<b>The Pharisees were intent on finding fault based upon their religious regulations.

This is what religion does, religion comes from a Latin word meaning 'return to bondage'

The motive of religion is not to honour God, but it is developed by man and is man's interpretation of who He thinks God is and what He states that God requires, not according to God but according to the religion.

There is no scripture that expressly forbids plucking grain and eating it on the Sabbath day. In fact the crowd, the Pharisees and the scribes were probably breaking their interpretation of the law, which stated that no journey of more than 2,000 paces could be undertaken on the Sabbath</b>

 

3 But he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did, when he was an hungred, and they that were with him;

 

<b>David and his companions had received bread from the priest when hungry According to the Law only the Levite's were allowed to eat this bread (Leviticus 24:7-9).

They all had the very bread of life with them at that moment (John 6:48) Yet the Pharisees preferred interpretations of their religion to receiving the Life of God.</b>

 

4 How he entered into the house of God, and did eat the shewbread, which was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them which were with him, but only for the priests?

 

5 Or have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless?

 

6 But I say unto you, That in this place is one greater than the temple.

 

<b>Jesus refers to God in the temple and the manifestation of God standing before them as an Anointed man (Acts 10:38)</b>

 

7 But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless.

 

8 For the Son of man is Lord even of the sabbath day.

 

<b>Jesus brings the true meaning of the Sabbath to be an honour and a delight to God (Is 58:13) Man's religious rules and regulations had removed the joy that God intended it to be.</b>

 

9 And when he was departed thence, he went into their synagogue:

 

10 And, behold, there was a man which had his hand withered. And they asked him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the sabbath days? that they might accuse him.

 

<b>The root of all this questioning and interpretation of what God would want according to man was satan.

In the garden satan said 'Indeed, has God said' (Gen 3:1)  and again 'If you are the Son of God' (Matt 4:3)

To walk in the light is to walk in the Kingdom of God's way of being right (1 John 1:7), to walk in darkeners  (1 John 1:6) is to walk in ourselves (Is 55:8) and be manipulated and controlled by the kingdom of darkness, which continually questions God and seeks to make itself god  (Is 14:13).</b>

 

11 And he said unto them, What man shall there be among you, that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out?

 

<b>Jesus brings it to God who is interested in mankind becoming partakers of Christ’s salvation ( Eph 2:8), for He so loved the world that He gave ( John 3:16) to bring us out of the pit and into His marvelous light (1 Pet 2:9)</b>

 

12 How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the sabbath days.

 

<b>A sheep cannot find it's way and is helpless, we are so much better than sheep because now we 'have the living Way' Christ himself, to enable us to walk in the light and to fulfill our heavenly call (Phil 3:14) </b>

 

13 Then saith he to the man, Stretch forth thine hand. And he stretched it forth; and it was restored whole, like as the other.

 

<b>(Ex 15:25) Jesus restores this man on the outside (Jer 30:17)  He is soon to restore and live on the inside by the Holy Spirit. (1 John 45:15)

God designed that He abide continually inside your spirit and come upon you in power to carry out His work. (Eph 3:14-21)</b>

 

14 Then the Pharisees went out, and held a council against him, how they might destroy him.

 

15 But when Jesus knew it, he withdrew himself from thence: and great multitudes followed him, and he healed them all;

 

16 And charged them that they should not make him known:

 

17 That it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying,

 

18 Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles.

 

19 He shall not strive, nor cry; neither shall any man hear his voice in the streets.

 

20 A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory.

 

<b>Reeds are very fragile and can easily be bruised or broken.

When an oil lamp was about to run out, the flax or wick would just smoke until the oil was replenished.

This illustrates that Jesus ministered in mercy to those who had been bruised or broken (Lu 4:18). And to those who had lost their oil (symbolic of spirit).

He came to fill them anew (Mt 5:3; Ac 1:5, and 2:4). </b>

 

21 And in his name shall the Gentiles trust.

 

<b>The Jews were used to the judgment of the Law, but Jesus came to minister grace and truth (Joh 1:17), even to the Gentiles (Mt 12:18 and 21).</b>

 

22 Then was brought unto him one possessed with a devil, blind, and dumb: and he healed him, insomuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw.

 

23 And all the people were amazed, and said, Is not this the son of David?

 

<b>They were so amazed that they were saying could this be the Son of David, the Messiah" (Matthew 1:1)</b>

 

24 But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, This fellow doth not cast out devils, but by Beelzebub the prince of the devils.

 

<b>Beelzebub (a name changed from the name Baal which meant " lord of the dung) is another name for satan , it was ludicrous to think that Satan would cast out one of his own demons from anybody.</b>

 

25 And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand:

 

26 And if Satan cast out Satan, he is divided against himself; how shall then his kingdom stand?

 

27 And if I by Beelzebub cast out devils, by whom do your children cast them out? therefore they shall be your judges.

 

<b>So if Satan was fighting against himself then he would bring about his own destruction.

If Jesus was using the power of satan to cast out demons then by whose power do their followers cast them out?   Their own followers will be the ones that will condemn them.</b>

 

28 But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God is come unto you.

 

<b>The living Kingdom of God (Jesus is the living kingdom of God, to walk in Him is to walk in the kingdom of God) was now available to them, but they did not know it. (Is 9:1-7)</b>

 

29 Or else how can one enter into a strong man's house, and spoil his goods, except he first bind the strong man? and then he will spoil his house.

 

<b>The “strong man’s house” is the satan's kingdom or dominion. He is the “ruler of demons” (12:24), the prince of the power of the air. “His goods” are demons.

Satan stole the authority from Adam and Eve, which allowed him to operate in the earth using corrupted authority which is control, until Jesus came.

Jesus stated that He had come to destroy (1 John 3:8) the works of satan and completed this on the cross (Col 2:15), and through His resurrection.

Jesus has now taken back all authority (Matt 28:18) from satan and has given it to whosoever will believe and walk in Him. (Luke 10:19)

The Holy Spirit has come (Acts 1:8) and through the Holy Spirit, the Kingdom of God is now available to every believer in Christ. (Eph 3:19)</b>

 

30 He that is not with me is against me; and he that gathereth not with me scattereth abroad.

 

31 Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.

 

<b>The sin that Jesus refers to is willful rejection of God, by rejecting Christ having once been saved (Heb. 6:4-6). Many people worry about whether they have committed this sin.

People who desire to know God or are afraid that they have committed this sin have not!

This sin is the continuing rejection of Jesus, to the point of spiritual callousness. This is similar to Heb. 6:4-6, Heb 10:26-31.</b>

 

32 And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.

 

<b>By rejecting Christ we immediately walk in the judgment of satan and if we knowingly continue, receive the judgment already given to him. (John 16:11)</b>

 

33 Either make the tree good, and his fruit good; or else make the tree corrupt, and his fruit corrupt: for the tree is known by his fruit.

 

<b> The “fruit” here is the words of the Pharisees. They attributed to satan the authentication of the Spirit about Jesus’ ministry. (Matt 7:16-23)</b>

 

34 O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.

 

<b> The mouth of the Pharisees reflected what was in their heart.

The more people believe something (abundance or overflow), the more they will speak what they believe. The “heart” represents the total person, not simply emotions. </b>

 

35 A good man out of the good treasure of the heart bringeth forth good things: and an evil man out of the evil treasure bringeth forth evil things.

 

<b> To promote one kingdom is to oppose the other. A person who believes, is committed to God and acts in Christ will draw on the treasure (the Christ within (2 Cor 4:7)). The opposite is true about a person with unbelief., he will draw from the storehouse of unbelief, where is corrupt treasure is open to the domain of satan. </b>

 

36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

 

<b>Words spoken have power, every word spoken (or sown Mark 4:13) outside of Christ will receive the result (Mark 4:19) or harvest of judgment assigned to satan. </b>

 

37 For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.

 

<b>It is the words that bring the harvest of judgment assigned to satan.

Thoughts lead to words (seeds), words lead to actions, (sown in the ground of the heart) actions lead to results (harvest). (Jam 1:14-15)</b>

 

38 Then certain of the scribes and of the Pharisees answered, saying, Master, we would see a sign from thee.

 

<b>This is exactly the temptation in (Matt. 4:5-7) to which Jesus would not succumb. However, in reality, He had given them sign after sign but they would not or could not see</b>

 

39 But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas:

 

40 For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.

 

<b>Speaking of His death and resurrection</b>

 

41 The men of Nineveh shall rise in judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: because they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.

 

42 The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here.

 

43 When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest, and findeth none.

 

44 Then he saith, I will return into my house from whence I came out; and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished.

 

<b>Empty of the Spirit of Christ and cleaned and with nothing of God left, but filled with religious ritual</b>

 

45 Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there: and the last state of that man is worse than the first. Even so shall it be also unto this wicked generation.

 

<b> Jesus uses this illustration to show the Pharisees that if he was to show them a sign that God was with him that they would believe and have a form of Godliness. (2 tim 3:5)

But only for a time because they demanded proof that God was with Jesus instead of having the actual faith of Christ.

So they would not enter His rest and find the rest of God.

They would then return to their old religious ways before Jesus showed them a sign.

Then they would become even worse than before the sign was showed to them.

By God's power, the Holy Spirit putting to death every evil thought whilst filling our "house" with Christ ( Rom 8:13).</b>

 

46 While he yet talked to the people, behold, his mother and his brethren stood without, desiring to speak with him.

 

47 Then one said unto him, Behold, thy mother and thy brethren stand without, desiring to speak with thee.

 

48 But he answered and said unto him that told him, Who is my mother? and who are my brethren?

 

<b>His mother and brethren stood outside, desiring to speak with him, when they could have been standing within, desiring to hear him.

they had come to take Him away, because they thought he had become distracted.</b>

 

49 And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren!

 

<b>All those who receive Him and are born again, are born into Him. (John 3:3) and become one with Him and the father (John 15:4)</b>

 

50 For whosoever shall do the will of my Father which is in heaven, the same is my brother, and sister, and mother.

 

<b>God's will is His word, led by the Holy Spirit. Ask anything in and according to His will, His word and it shall be done (John. 15:16). </b>
