1 In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,

2 And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

To repent means to change our thinking from our thinking into Jesus way of thinking, outlined in God's Word. Jesus, who is the Word (John 1:1) and who is the Way (John 14:6) His way of doing things is here termed the Kingdom of heaven, or the Kingdom of God's way. Which is God's way of dong and being right. (Matt 6:33 (amp)). By repenting we receive the mind of Christ, (1 Cor 2:16) by receiving the Word of God by the Holy Spirit, who brings the revelation of Christ in us our hope of glory (Col 1:27). To receive the Holy Spirit

1. Be born again (John 3:7, Rom 9-10).

2.Repent and be baptised, you will receive the Holy Spirit. (Acts 2:38)

3. Ask, and it shall be given you (Math 7:7).

4. Use your new tongue (prayer language) to talk to God (in private) which will build you up and maintain the faith which you have just received (1 Cor 14:2 amp).

3 For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

John's calling is the fulfillment of (Is 40:3). Jesus is the embodiment of a new and living way (Heb 10:20), through His sacrifice we can be right with God and through Jesus enter into and live in His way (John 3:3).

4 And the same John had his raiment of camel's hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins; and his meat was locusts and wild honey.

5 Then went out to him Jerusalem, and all Judaea, and all the region round about Jordan,

6 And were baptized of him in Jordan, confessing their sins.

7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come?

8 Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:

9 And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham.

10 And now also the axe is laid unto the root of the trees: therefore every tree which bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.

John is echoing what Jesus will later explain in detail in (John 15), anything not abiding in God's Way, outside of Jesus will not stand. Attempting to find some other way will not endure, but there have been and will be many that will try. (John 10:1) there is only One true way (John 14:6). Why because only through Christ can we be made right(righteous) in God.

11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:

To enter and live in God's Way, through Jesus cannot be done by an individual's own effort or by good works, or by being good. It requires supernatural power, by the Holy Ghost. How will this be done? the Holy Ghost Luke (1:34-35 Zech 4:6).

12 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.

The fan was used to blow and separate the unwanted part of the wheat called chaff. In John 15:6 Jesus explains to live some other way results in being separated from Him.Trials tribulations will cause us to be unfruitful Mark 4:13-19 It is not God that separates us, as He will never leave us nor forsake us, but we can become separated from God, preventing the Word of God from being active and alive in us (Mark 7:13).

13 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him.

Amazing, confirming that even Jesus cannot become and provide the Way, until He first receives the Holy Spirit (John 3:5). Baptism by water is not the requirement but Baptism by the Holy Spirit is (total immersion in the spirit (Acts 1:5). (Acts 19:1-6) Baptism by water is a declaration of the death, burial and resurrection of Christ. (Rom 6:3-5).

14 But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me?

15 And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.

Jesus confirms that by His submission to be baptised in water, he also submits to the Fathers will signifying being born of water or from 'the waters of birth' as a man. then follows His baptism in the Spirit to become the Christ the anointed one, anointed of God, to set the captives free (Luke 4:18).

16 And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:

The Spirit descends 'like a dove' not a dove but in the same manner a dove would alight. Jesus receives the Baptism of the Holy Spirit (John 3:5).

17 And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

God now confirms that he is 'well pleased', every obstacle that was between mankind and the Father has now been removed and will be nailed to Jesus' cross. (Is 57:14, Eph 2:16) The Way has opened for all mankind to enter into Gods Way and be reborn of the Spirit after being born once through the waters of human birth (John 3:6).
